  3. Primary Division

The Primary Program places strong emphasis on developing basic ballet technique. Students are expected to gain muscular strength, develop stamina and control as they learn the ballet technique that is appropriate for their level.

As standard procedure, students of all ages learn the basic ballet positions, the progression of a standard ballet barre and French vocabulary that defines all of the steps in classical ballet.

Registered applicants with little or no formal dance training documented on the registration form are generally placed in the Primary Ballet 1, Primary Ballet 2, or Primary Ballet 3. New students with extensive ballet training are invited to take a placement class to assess their skill level.

Starting in Level 1A, student advancement is based on ability, not age. This allows students to develop the layers of knowledge that form the foundation of ballet technique.

Students develop poise and musicality in a fun and creative environment

These lessons help to improve the student’s cognitive and physical development as well as gross motor skills by introducing them to basic ballet positions.

Concentration and listening are still encouraged and there is a focus on working well together as a group.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING/PILATES

Essential foundation building for dancers

Every successful dancer is strong as well as flexible. Through conditioning, young dancers are able to build the physique they need in order to master increasingly complex dance moves.

The emphasis of each class is on safely improving flexibility and core strength, through a series of movements and exercises. Students who take conditioning are able to progress their dance skills faster.

Students are placed in this class according to ability, not age. Students with previous experience are invited to be assessed in a placement class so we can confirm their level of training.
